Skin-lightening creams (hydroquinone)
Hydroquinone was removed from over-the-counter sale in the US in 2020 and now requires a prescription, because it's linked to real problems, including a stubborn skin-darkening condition called ochronosis, plus contact dermatitis. Some products claiming to 'even' skin still contain it illegally. Dark marks left by pimples fade on their own with time and daily sunscreen. If a mark genuinely worries you, that's a clinician conversation, not a cream purchase.
what the evidence says
OTC sale ended under the 2020 CARES Act; documented adverse effects include exogenous ochronosis and contact dermatitis.
